September 23-29th 2014
with Cora Greenhill
A unique writing holiday for a small group of women in beautiful West Crete, to feed our imaginations and inspire our writing with visits to ancient sites in breathtaking landscapes.
In Crete, the ‘veil between worlds’ is famously thin. You will be entering intimately into a timeless land of sacred caves, wells and waterfalls, ruins of temples and tombs, all within easy driving distance (no long haul journeys). The precise programme will be responsive to the group’s need to balance visits with writing and downtime.
You will stay in spacious apartments overlooking the beautiful bay of Almyrida. My home and garden, just 1 km away, will provide a private space for meeting, writing and workshopping. There will be time for swimming, relaxing, and sharing wonderful Cretan meals in seaside tavernas.
Cora Greenhill has been visiting Crete for 30 years, first attracted by the island’s ancient Minoan culture, then falling in love with the whole island. She now has a home there, and an intimate knowledge of the area. She has been bringing groups for many years, sharing her knowledge and passion by combining creative dance, writing, and pilgrimage with holiday. She has a background in literature, education, counselling, and teaching 5Rhythms dance and creative writing. Much of her latest poetry collection, The Point of Waking (Oversteps 2013) and earlier work, has been inspired by Crete ancient and modern.
Feedback from previous courses
‘I am still bathing in the energy of our time together in Crete-it was an amazingly profound experience.’ Ann
‘Here is my script - it’s been lovely to write it up and remember what a delicious day we had doing the poems.’ Rosie
'I've learned so much from Cora's teaching, not just about women's poetry, but about myself. She creates an atmosphere that is both encouraging and challenging, respectful and accepting of all our efforts whilst always seeking to build on and improve. Each session has inspired me and widened my thinking. I come away feeling more in touch with the source of the writer in me.' Caroline
‘engages honestly with the minutiae of life until something more than the obvious emerges...poems rich and sensual in life energies...sharing her deeply connected vision’.
Will Parfitt, author and publisher.
‘a pungent and elemental poetry’. David Caddy, editor, Tears in the Fence
‘rich, earthy evocation of Crete, as it drifts slowly towards modernity, yet remains still ... mysterious, still charged with spiritual presence,‘ Rose Flint, poet, priestess and art therapist.

Costs and other nitty gritty for Poetry Pilgrims 2014
Because charter flights from UK to Chania, the nearest airport, are on Tuesdays, the course will run from Wed morning until Sunday evening (5 days), with a welcome dinner on Tues evening included. Monday 29th will be a free day.
For anyone travelling on a day other than Tuesday, (eg with Easyjet or Ryanair,) you will enjoy some extra days on the beautiful big island of Crete! I can send you more information about flights if you need it.
Costs: course fee for administration, organisation, teaching, and a welcome meal: £200
7 nts Accommodation: Approx E175 - 210 with own room in large shared apartment with unimpeded views over the bay. I will reserve it for you when you book the course and you pay directly in Euros on arrival.
Airfares: may vary between about £200 - £280. Many options - info on request.
Food and drink: You will have a kitchen to make breakfast and other meals if you wish. Some lunches will be shared at my house, or self-catered picnics. Evening meals will typically be in tavernas.
Car hire for airport transfers from Chania and excursions will be dependent on the number sharing. I’ll attempt to get best deal when I know how many are on the course and who is willing to drive (2 small cars can be cheaper than a people carrier, but depends on at least 2 participants being prepared to drive). If you prefer to hire your own car (for instance if you plan to arrive a few days before the course, or fly to Heraklion), just let me know. If you arrive at Heraklion airport, you will need to arrange your own transport, either by car, taxi, or buses. We will put you in touch if there are others in the same situation.
Non-participating companions and children: this holiday course is designed as a creative retreat for women, and we strongly advise that you leave your loved ones behind!
In the unlikely case of the course being cancelled, your fee will be refunded in full. If the course is not viable by Sept 1st, it will be cancelled. In the likely event that you have booked your flight by then, there will not be compensation for flights if the course is cancelled: you will still have your holiday in Crete!
